Boiler failure

It’s very bright weather at the moment and the sun is shining, however it's freezing cold and we have no central heating. The oil fired boiler that serves the heating and hot water to the house we moved into just three weeks ago has decided to stop working. Luckily we have a small but effective electric heater; the hot water can be heated using an emersion heater and an open fire in our living room.

We have an engineer working on the problem, but it has taken him three days of hard work to dismantle the five year old boiler and diagnose the problem. The boiler has been serviced regularly but it was not fitted correctly when it was installed. Rain water has got in to the exhaust flue and corrosion has set in rendering the internals useless. Hopefully the thing will be working today, but it still might mean replacing the unit before next winter.

Along with no internet connection and our cats regularly murdering rodents and devouring them outside the back door, my poor wife is in a state of despair.  She is beginning to think that our idyllic move to the country is becoming something of a nightmare.  I disagree; things will only get better, (hopefully)! :-)

  1. Oh Kevin, I hope you get the boiler fixed and working correctly very soon. I don't know your weather at the moment hopefully its not as cold as here in New York City. I have to agree with your wife when it comes to the rodents...Oh my goodness...You know there's a comic farce novel there. It sounds just like a Lynn Truss novel and I love her! Get writing :)

  2. Hello Kimberly. Last night I went home to a very warm house, the boiler has been fixed. We were also connected to the internet yesterday, so Maria is much happier.
All I have to do now is sort out the cats and the rodent problem! :-)

  3. Oh dear, things can only get better. I know how miserable it can be without one. When ours broke down six months after moving in, with a three week old baby, it wasn't the best of times. We too needed a new boiler, but it was he best thing we did. We have had no problems since then.

    1. Thank you for your message. It was miserable without the boiler as it was freezing during that particular week in February. The boiler was fixed and has just been serviced, so hopefully no more problems this winter.
It must have been particularly stressful for you especially with a new baby in the house. Glad you have got yours sorted.
      All the best.

  4. Hiring the right person for a boiler install is so important. It can be a tricky thing to do. I once saw a show about the dangers of hiring someone who does not know what they are doing however most places have certifications that can be checked. So make sure it is something that is looked into before hiring someone.

  5. Problems always seem to happen at once, don't they? When our boiler decided to break down, my laptop also died and the car needed a new gearbox. I could have cried. Luckily the boiler problem was easily solved. A fantastic plumbing company quickly got it working again. It just needed a new thermostat. Hope things get better for you soon.

    1. Hello Lovella.

Boiler all fixed now but also had to have a new pump for the central heating, so yes, expensive problems all seem to come at once.
      Thank you for stopping by.
